Advent Character Study - The Word

John 1:1-5; 10-14

The Word is God (vv. 1-2)

• The Word
  1. For the Greek “the Word” meant  , it was the force that brought order to things.
  2. For the Jew “the Word” represented  . More precisely it represented wisdom as set forth in the Old Testament.
• The Word was not only in the beginning but he was also with God.
• “with”
  1. Meaning - “to or toward”
  2. Indicates an  .
• John is very clear about two things, the Word  God, and yet the word is  from the Father.

The Word is the Creator (vv. 3-5)

• Exodus 3:14 ; John 8:58
  1. Jesus is the great “I AM”
• The life that is in the word gives us light, because life is the light of men.
  1. Through the Word we receive  of God.
• The Word shines in the darkness but the darkness is unable to  or grasp the light.

The Word was rejected (vv.10-11)

•  indictment directed toward the world.
  1. The divine Word created the world, but his own creation did not recognize him.
•  indictment directed toward Israel.
  1. Jesus was sent to Israel and they   him.

The Word was accepted (vv. 12-13)

• Those who receive him and believe in his name are given the right to be called children of God.
• To his  sons and daughters, God gives all the rights and privileges that are due a natural child.
• Belief = Faith.
• To receive = to take or to take hold of.

The Word became flesh

•  Union = the union of the Words divine and human nature.
